New, free music makes my ears go a-flutter

Some of my favorite artists are coming out with new albums this year and I can’t wait! Amazing, new music is one of my very favorite things. There’s nothing like a fantastic song to cheer me up. Add in that the artists themselves are allowing free downloads of their songs and it’s like the (vegan) frosting on the cake. So I’ve got two free downloads, one video, and a super cool tape that plays music for you. [Update: I realized that I probably should have included the songs so that you could listen to them to decided whether or not you’d like to have them so I added those in.]

I’ve loved Fleet Foxes ever since I heard their song White Winter Hymnal three years ago and it’s still a favorite of mine (number two most played song on my iTunes). Last spring the weather was extra warm and I went on long bike rides in the country almost every day; Fleet Foxes was constantly playing on repeat. Fleet Foxes is a folk band from Seattle, Washington and is currently made up of Robin Pecknold, Skyler Skjelset, J. Tillman, Casey Wescott, Christian Wargo, and Morgan Henderson. Their new album, Helplessness Blues, will be released on May 3rd. I’m already in love with their new single by the same title and you can get it for free by going here. Once you reach that page, it’s right under “Listen”.

One of the best things that happened from my living in London for a year was all of the spectacular music I discovered. Noah and the Whale was one of my greatest discoveries. Their first two albums are full of hope, heartache, and songs that will make you want to cry or get up and start cheerfully dancing. Noah and the Whale is a London, England band with four members: Charlie Fink, Tom Hobden, Matt “Urby Whale” Owens, and Fred Abbott. Their newest album, Last Night On Earth, will be out March 7th. Below you can listen to two of their new songs, Wild Thing and L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.

Alexi Murdoch’s last album came out in 2006 so this feels like a long time coming. Luckily, he was the musician behind the Away We Go soundtrack which was probably what made me that much more interested in his music. His album, Towards the Sun, will be released on March 8th. For a free download of his song by the same name, go to Alexi Murdoch’s website and click on News/Tour. It’s right under Feb. 2. You’ll get an email which will lead to a link where you can download it absolutely free.

I hope you’ve enjoyed all of this music I’ve shared with you! What new music are you looking forward to in 2011? Any recommendations?

I really enjoy Noah and the Whale too. Don’t know the Fleet Foxes, but will have to check them out.

Clare – I went back and added in the couple of free songs I mentioned so you could give them a listen here, if you’d like! Sorry I didn’t do that before!
