Adding in more healthy & raw foods

I’ve posted a couple somewhat healthy, but also quite sweet breakfasts such as pancakes and maple syrup oatmeal, but my breakfast usually consists of slices of bread with hummus and an assortment of fresh veggies like the photograph above. I used to hate the vegetables that top these slices not too long ago. Now I go for the celery almost every time I start planning a meal and the radishes I’m slowly easing into my diet. Before the celery and radish mix, I’d mostly stick to tomatoes on hummus and, if I had it, spring onions. It’s actually thanks to Wit & Whistle that I tried combining celery with hummus. Who knew they’d make such a great match? Yum! I even made this for one of my brothers and dad before and they liked it quite a bit, too. (If you try this, I warn you that I used this much spring onion because this type wasn’t very strong, but with some spring onions, adding this much would be overkill.) Do you eat any vegetables now that you used to despise?

After coming upon this article from Planet Green via Care2, I was reminded that my breakfasts used to be even healthier. I used to start every morning with a cup of fresh squeezed orange juice and fruits or a salad. Moving to Switzerland changed things up for a bit, but it’s about time I go back to the super fresh and healthy breakfast I grew so found of. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons that breakfast is the most important meal of the day is because it’s the first bit of fuel you get for the day and it can get your day started on the right or wrong side depending on what you eat.

Then yesterday, I read a fantastic article from Crazy Sexy Life about “the benefits of juicing” (which I highly recommend) and just the words got me energized and inspired (you may have seen me post it on Twitter and/or Facebook). According to the writer Cherie Calbom, drinking green smoothies every day can improve your health, skin, body, eyesight, mood, and so much more. She’s even included statistics such as “the vast majority of respondents (87.5 percent) reported better mental, emotional, and spiritual health” and “80 percent of the people surveyed lost weight.” Having read the article, I had one of those thoughts I sometimes get: if only everyone ____ (insert desired good deed, in this case “drank green smoothies”), what a wonderful world this would be!

On my fasting days, I try to consciously incorporate more raw foods, but I should really be doing that every day. I love how Angela writes and shares her 50% raw meals on her blog. She makes it look tasty and easy. When it comes to certain decisions in life, I think about what the best and most natural thing to do would be. For food, I think it’s raw vegetables and fruits. I don’t know how likely this’ll be, but I hope to one day eat mostly, if not all, raw foods. Till then, I’ll work on experimenting and adding more healthy and raw foods into my diet. What are some of your favorite healthy meals and foods? About how much of what you eat would you estimate is raw? What do you think is the best and healthiest way to eat and why?

What a healthy and delicious looking breakfast! I loved reading about the juicing – I must do it especially if it improves skin! Mine has been crazy from all my work stress. I wonder if I could bring a juicer to work 🙂

I technically have two breakfasts every morning: pre-workout and post-workout. The pre is almost always sweet (I like starting my day like that), usually a bowl of cheerios and milk or some oatmeal with a bit of honey. The post is mostly scrambled eggs (LOVE them) and toast with jam. I’ve been trying to figure out how to incorporate more raw, unprocessed foods in the morning, but I’m not sure what to do yet. Banana maybe. Yogurt. I’ll have to experiment.

I’ve never tried that combination before. I’m looking forward to it!
Can you believe, I used to despise garlic? Now I love it on everything. Same goes for olives of any color (although kalamata remains my least favorite).
