Save the Amazon rainforest & stop murder

Did you know that environmental activists are being killed in Brazil for protecting the Amazon rainforest? I was distraught about a month ago when I read about married couple Jose Claudio Ribeiro and Maria Do Espirito Santo Da Silva getting shot and killed for protesting against loggers. They were ambushed by gunmen. This was no accident, it was deliberate, and it’s far from the first time. Many deaths go unreported with an estimated 1,500 murders since 1988.

Avaaz is trying to reach 1,000,000 signatures to send to the president of Brazil asking for the protection of the Amazon rainforest and prevention of “further murders of environmental activists and workers by increasing law enforcement against illegal loggers and ramping up protection for people at risk from violence or death.” There are currently plans to cut laws and make it even easier for loggers, but President Dilma can veto this proposed change. 79% of Brazilians are in favor of a veto, but they need our help. Let President Dilma of Brazil know that we want the Amazon and its people protected by signing here and spreading the word. Thank you!

i read about that couple too, it’s just so awful! and the fact that the government isn’t doing anything about it because of money is so disheartening. i’ll head over to sign the petition now.

Thank you two! They’re still a ways away from 1,00,000 signatures but hopefully they’ll get there soon and we’ll see positive results!
