The one which has opened for us

Who wouldn’t spend too long looking at this door? You may have spotted it in the second to last photo in my Flurlingen post.

I’ve heard the quote “when one door closes, another one opens” time and time again, but it wasn’t until fairly recently that I read these words by Alexander Graham Bell. I’d always wonder where my door was and why I couldn’t open it, I’ve even mentioned it to all of you in a previous post.

Perhaps my problem all along was that I was staring at these closed doors instead of moving on to the wide open doors that are there just for me and ready to take me where I need to go if only I follow the path.

I know that’s what I did before. I so badly (and stubbornly) wanted to go to this one school and had told myself pretty much that I go there or nowhere. So I ended up going nowhere for quite a few years. But now I’m trying again and I hope I’m going towards the right door for once. I’ve chosen to study wildlife conservation instead of creative writing.

I will always be a writer and (hopefully) will continue writing for the rest of my life (lately my mind keeps pulling me back to my book and my characters are wanting me to continue their story!) but, whereas I have stories in my mind, I don’t have the knowledge I know I need to help animals and the environment to my full potential.

We’ll see whether or not this path will lead me to an open or closed door, but keep your fingers crossed for me please! And I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you… just tell me what for, what open door you’re hoping to get to! Have a wonderful weekend, my friends!

That door is absolutely gorgeous! And its amazing what different angles you use to make it look like that! I had to go back and look at the picture to check to see if that door was in your last post lol but there it was, just in a different angle! Still gorgeous though!

And I will definitely keep my fingers crossed for you! I have faith that you are headed in the right direction! You just have to stay positive and hope for the best. Being negative will get you nowhere but being positive can take you over mountains if you tried hard enough!

But yes, I know all too well about holding onto the doors that have already closed and not paying attention to the ones that have opened up for me. I have slowly started to not focus on the past anymore and started looking to the future. I still have a few things that seem like they will hold me back but I am working through those also. You just have to always remember that you don’t need to hold onto the past to move forward. In fact, holding onto the past usually is a hendrence (???) for moving forward. If you can let go of what was/will be/whatever it is and move on to what could be, then you have so many more options opened up for you. I know I probably strayed off of your topic, but that is just my feelings on closed/open doors. At the time, it will be difficult to stay positive and let go of the past but if you are able to, it will be so much better in the long run. So many more options will await you.

I had a similar experience. I wanted to go to an interior design school so bad but the school wanted all these crazy paperwork despite me already graduated with a degree in another university in the States. So one thing leads to another and I ended up going nowhere for a few years! Sigh…

Anyway, lovely image and the quote is so true! Thanks for sharing!

I’m a big believer in trusting in the world. It will lead you through the right doors at the right times. I know it can be hard at times. Right now I feel like I’m blindfolded in a room of doors, some open, some closed. I’m just going to trust the pull. I have no doubt that wherever you go, it will be the right path.

Great quote, and so true, too. (Beautiful photo too, by the way!) I remember a former friend of mine once telling me, when things in my life weren’t working out like we both hoped they would, that “the universe has something else in mind.”
Even though she’s an ex-friend to me now, that statement still means a lot to me, and I try to keep it in mind when things don’t go how I’d like them to. I do still find myself looking regretfully at closed doors sometimes, though. But, I try to acknowledge that, yeah, they’re closed, and I’ve gotta move on now through the open ones.

I think you’ve made a great choice, I highly approve. ^_^ There’s SO MUCH to know and learn about animals and the environment. You can always work on your writing skills in your spare time. Oh! That reminds me of a blog post I read about this recently: http://www.thebooklantern.com/2011/06/how-to-be-writer-when-youre-not.html
It pretty much says that you don’t necessarily NEED to major in English/creative writing to be a writer; you just need to keep writing and reading, and getting better. (Constructive critique from other writers being a plus)

I think you made a really good, smart choice here, and I hope it leads to great, exciting things for you. =)

Congratulations! It’s so hard to make a decision different from what you always thought you’d do – I feel that way about writing, too, but like you, I know I will always come back to it.

Your blog is beautiful, by the way!

Eva, your pictures are gorgeous. Half the time I get caught up in your photos before I can even digest the message. Then, I read your posts and I’m moved even more. The extension of the well known, “When one door closes…” quote was excellent. Thanks so much for sharing.

I did notice (and admire) that door in your previous post! It’s so handsome and inviting – I love that color, and I love your photo of it.

I applaud your choice of a field of study! It’s much needed in this world, and I hope you find it’s your calling. As for your creative writing, I think Lauren gave you great advice – so write on! πŸ™‚ And by all means keep photographing! You have an incredible eye and talent there, too.

I think we all go through the struggle of insisting we know what we want when the Universe knows differently, an argument we will never win, a closed door we will never pry open even if we spend an entire lifetime of frustration trying. It’s difficult enough to shift our focus off the thing we wanted, never mind to surrender to the flow and trust it! But that’s pretty much when the magic always happens.

I don’t know if you’re familiar with the late, great Joseph Campbell and his writings, but here’s a quote I think will resonate with you (and from the sounds of it, most of your readers!)

I say, follow your bliss and don’t be afraid,
and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be.
If you follow your bliss, doors will open for you that wouldn’t have opened for anyone else.

You can find that quote in its entirety here, along with some other pearls of wisdom from Joseph Campbell.

Fingers are crossed for you at all times in all things! πŸ™‚

Eva, you are a shining light. I hope you get to go to the school of your dreams but I know whatever doors open and close for you, you will be a success and inspiration!

Thank you to each and every one of you for sharing your insightful thoughts! For some reason, I was expecting more comments about the quote itself rather than my life decision, but you’ve pleasantly surprised me. I so appreciate the encouragement.

I think we should focus solely on the present time and not the past or the future as we cannot change either one. We can only work on what is now, remember and appreciate the past, and shape the future with our present actions. So whatever is behind that door, I’ll find out sooner or later, but for now I’m going to do the best I possibly can in this moment and walk forward with a smile.

Thank you for keeping your fingers crossed for me, hopefully I’ll have great news to give you within the next few weeks/months! And of course I will always continue to write.. heck, Four Leaf Clover isn’t going anywhere! ; )

Laloofah – What a great quote! I’d never heard about Joseph Campbell, but now I’m intrigued.

good! i know it’s hard, discouraging, & disheartening when things don’t go as we want them. but i think it can be even more discouraging to do absolutely nothing. i’m so glad you took the time you needed to recover, but are now moving forward in something that you can be passionate about. i would also say, don’t feel like you have to have things figured out right now. if you get into the program and decide it’s not for you, then that’s fine. you’ll know for sure. if you love it, but also want to continue writing, then you can carve out a life that includes both. for a long time i felt so confused about life thinking i had to pick one thing. i’m now on my 3rd career and i’ve finally realized that i am a person defined by LOTS of different things. i don’t have to pick between them, i just have to arrange my life so i can enjoy all of them on the day to day. good luck my dear, i know you’ll get it all figured out.
