What’s in a name

Quite a few people have asked me where the name Four Leaf Clover came from and I figure it’s about time I answer the question. I had a lot of trouble trying to decide what I should name this blog. I even made a list of different titles I was considering and asked my family to choose their favorite. “Four Leaf Clover” wasn’t on this list. Everyone checked something different so I was back to where I started. One day it just popped into my head.

I have a knack for finding four leaf clovers wherever I go. I remember there was one day I found over 25. Below, or after clicking “Read more”, is a picture of the eight four leaf clovers I saved in my journal from April 2010. I was writing an entry and found one, then another, and so on. One of them happens to be the one I used for my header.

Everyone knows that four leaf clovers stand for luck and that’s exactly what I’m hoping for with this blog of mine: lots and lots of luck. I figured I’ve found so many of them in my life, maybe they’ll finally start giving me some luck. I looked up the history and meaning of four leaf clovers to make sure there wasn’t any bad hidden meaning or anything silly like that and was quite surprised with the information I found. Each leaf stands for something different: hope, faith, love and, of course, luck. Most of the sites I found said similar things. There is a legend that Eve carried a four leaf clover from the Garden of Eden. This was especially interesting to me because my name Eva, in other languages, is Eve. (By the way, in case you’re wondering, my name is pronounced EV like EVer, A like Apple: EVA) Another site even says that you are “holding onto a bit of paradise” if you find a four leaf clover. It was said to be a charm against evil spirits. There was one story that said that if a child found a four leaf clover they were rewarded with the gift of seeing fairies. I’ve written a book (which I plan on finally finishing up the editing process soon!) and fairies are a big part of it. As you see, every one of these finds has meant a bit of something for me and hopefully it will help out in the success of my blog. We’ll see!

I hope you will someday soon, Connie! Or, at least, have all the luck you need without it!

Aww, I love this! All the meanings you found about them, and how most of them were meaningful to you! (Like the Eve one, holy moley :o And fairies! :D)
That is too cool that you’ve been able to find so many four leaf clovers. I remember you telling me about the day you found 25 ;D I think I’ve found like…four in my lifetime, ha :p Two I remember saving in wax paper. I dunno where those got to…

Great back story behind your title for this blog, you made a good choice! :)

(also, good idea throwing in the proper pronunciation of your name; I went too long pronouncing your name the wrong way. ^^’)

Michael – Thank you! I’m so pleased to hear this inspired you!

Lauren – Thanks for commenting!! I actually think it was 27, but I wasn’t 100% sure so I stuck to the safer number, ha! I’ve found one so far here in Switzerland, but I didn’t protect it very well so it got scrunched and tossed out. Thank you, I’m glad you like my blog name!

I’m so glad you picked this for the name on your blog :) It definitely suits you as well as the blog! As long as I have known you, you were always finding four leaf clovers in your backyard. It only makes sense for you to name your blog this!

I love all the different meanings each leaf has. I had no idea that they meant something different! Although you are more interested in the “Luck” part of the meanings, I really like that the other three mean “Hope, Faith, and Love.” I’m not a huge believer in luck. Although, I do believe that you cannot have Luck without the other three. And I hope you find all four of those this year!! You deserve the best my dear :) And this blog is a great way to start finding your “luck” that you are looking for!!

Oh, Misty… you wish me all four, eh? Not so sure about the “love” part happening this year, ha… but the other two, hope and faith, are pretty much just as important to me as luck. As you pointed out, they all sort of go hand-in-hand. Thanks so much for your encouraging words! :) I’m so glad you like my blog title choice!

I find four leaf clovers all the time. Sometimes about 20 a day and without actually looking. They find me! I even find five and six leaf clovers here and there. When I was little, I believed that they brought good luck. But now, at 19 years old, I find that I have TERRIBLE luck. I jokingly tell everyone that it’s because I have picked more than the allowed amount to be considered lucky. But now I think about it more and more. Could there really be such a thing as four leaf clovers being unlucky???

Kristen – I definitely don’t think gathering “too many” four leaf clovers would be unlucky because that would mean I’m very unlucky, ha! I don’t see myself as unlucky. Maybe if you look around at some of my other posts here on Four Leaf Clover, you’ll find that it’s not the four leaf clovers that are making you feel unlucky. I have the same strange ability to find them. I can literally just glance at the ground and see one. My 7 year old is the same way. Never really could think of any use for that “talent”, and aside from four leaf clovers, It’s not as easy for me to find other things, lol. The hobbie I guess you could say, brought me joy as a child, so that makes it “useful”, to me. The thought behind their symbolism is as beautiful as anything could be.

Once when I was younger I found a whole bunch of them and me and my friends picked them all and through them in the air and said we were showering in luck
