Did you know today is International Women’s Day (IWD)? This day has always been a big deal for my family; after work my dad brought home flowers for my mother and me. IWD wasn’t recognized ever in any school or elsewhere around me in America when I lived there which is a shame. My mother said that when she was going to school, on this day, boys had to be especially nice to girls, they weren’t even allowed to hit a girl with a flower as a joke! To say the least, things have changed quite a bit. Wikipedia describes this day as ” a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements.” Some countries even mark IWD as a national holiday! Today marks the 100th anniversary of IWD. There are events all around the world and actions that can be taken for women. You can find out more at InternationalWomensDay.com.
