Take part & turn off your lights for Earth Hour!

One of my very favorite events is tomorrow: Earth Hour! It’s only been around for three years, but I look forward to it every year. One of my proudest moments (no kidding!) was when a former classmate of mine told me that they participated in Earth Hour and it made them think of me. Little me! I must have done something right during my environmental club days.

Two years ago when I lived in London, my brother Robert and I decided to do what we would usually be doing at the time, but with candlelight in place of our usual energy-sucking lights (compact fluorescent though they may have been, they still use up energy). It was an unfortunate rainy day hence the staying at home. Earth Hour came and went and the lights stayed off and continued to stay off throughout the following days while our candles lasted. Candles create such a great atmosphere. Somehow everything seemed more quiet, the presence of music seemed more obvious, and conversation seemed easier and lighter. Plus, it felt like we were taken back in time, using our candles to get from room to room.

What I’m saying is… Earth Hour 2011 is tomorrow: Saturday, 26 March at 8:30pm all over the world and I hope you take part! This year WWF (the organization behind this awesome event) is asking people to go “beyond the hour” and think of things you can do to help this beautiful and suffering planet of ours. Find out more by going to the Earth Hour website! Also, because of the year “starting off badly” with the earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan, New Zealand, and Chile among other places (plus the horror so many are facing due to their governments), this Earth Hour “aims for hope in [a] darkened world”. To find out more, read The Independent‘s article.

I love this video! It makes me wish I could take part in such an event. There’s always next year! And they used one of my very favorite songs Sweet Dispostion by The Temper Trap! They’ve also got a cute stop-motion video that I suggest watching. Don’t know what to do for an hour without lights? Do The Green Thing has a great list of 10 possibilities. Have fun with it!
