Sharks get a bit of a break in the US

Yesterday I came across some great news on Treehugger and Ecorazzi and then today I got some even better news in my email: Success! Shark Finning Banned in the U.S. Turns out that a petition I signed a while back worked its magic (along with many other pleas)! I want to bring you all more than just the cruel things going on in this world that needs to be fixed or stopped and I’m glad I’ve been given the opportunity, so early in my blogging days, to present to you something to be happy about when it comes to animal welfare. Shark finning is when sharks are caught in the water, have their fins cut off, and their bodies are tossed back into the water. Today the United States passed the Shark Conservation Act which makes it illegal to kill sharks for their fins in the U.S.!

Wow! That is awesome! I’ve honestly never really seen any of the petitions I have ever signed actually work. That is great to see that they DO make a difference!!! Animals should not be treated the way that they are, and I’m glad people are taking a stand!! This makes me want to get more involved myself!!!

Your comment made me so happy, Misty! That’s fantastic! My goal with this blog is to inform people of what they can do to make a difference in the world and I hope it’ll be a good resource that you may come to so that you may get more involved and help where you can. Thank you!

I was so happy to hear about this!! 😀
I mean, okay, it may not have a HUGE impact, since most of the shark finning I’ve heard of isn’t done in U.S. waters, as far as I know, but at least the U.S. is taking a positive stand on this issue! 😀
(Sets a good example for the rest of the world to follow, and if anyone DOES try to pull any shark finning here, it’ll be stopped and sharks will be saved. :])

For anyone interested in sharks and the threats they face from humans today, I highly recommend the documentary movie Sharkwater. It’s informative and compelling, and Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society makes a guest appearance! 😀

I’m going to have to watch movie soon. It’s been showing up on the top of my Amazon recommended list for a while now.
The ban says that you’re not allowed to cut off shark’s fins and toss the bodies back into the water, but you can take the whole shark to shore and cut off the fins there. This will most likely not happen too often because it’s just not cost-effective and we all know these industries are thinking only about money.
